Rachel died in Le Cannet is a post about the famous tragic actress and the admiration she received from Charlotte Brontë.

» All the way to Le Cannet, there is an electric tram, and the scenery on either side is quite commonplace and uninteresting. Buildings in course of erection, small shops and restaurants spoiling the scenery.

Le Cannet was at one time a little village by itself.

Now its chief attraction lies in the fact that it is well on the borders of the villa-studded area. And those who stay there enjoy splendid views towards the Esterels and in most other directions. They have as well, country walks of great beauty close at hand.

The village had a few old houses, and has the distinction of owning the villa in which Elisa Rachel, the tragic actress, died in 1858.

Charlotte Brontë saw her act in London in 1851.

She writes :

« On Saturday« , I went to hear and see Rachel; a wonderful sight – terrible as if the earth had cracked deep at your feet and revealed a glimpse of hell. I shall never forget it. She made me shudder to the marrow of my bones; in her some fiend has certainly taken up an incarnate home. She is not a woman; she is a snake. »

Une tragédienne pour la reine Victoria à Nice raconte la représentation spéciale que Sarah Bernhardt a donné pour la souveraine.

» Je me souviens aussi de la vive impression que produisit sur la Reine Victoria le jeu et la voix de Mme Sarah Bernhardt lorsqu’elle assista pour la première fois à une représentation de l’illustre tragédienne.

C’était précisément à Nice, au printemps de 1897.

La Reine était à l’hôtel Excelsior lorsqu’elle fit prier Mme Sarah Bernhardt qui donnait, une série de représentations à Nice de lui accorder la joie de l’applaudir.

Celle-ci s’empressa d’accepter el proposa de venir jouer devant la Reine.

La soirée s’organisa aussitôt. On improvisa une scène dans le grand salon de l’hôtel. L’admirable artiste remporta ce soir-là un des plus inoubliables succès de sa carrière bien qu’il n’y eût qu’une trentaine d’auditeurs pour l’applaudir.

Sitôt la toile baissée, la Reine appela Mme Sarah Bernhardt près d’elle.

Après l’avoir chaleureusement complimentée, elle lui attacha un de ses bracelets et lui offrit sa photographie aimablement dédicacée.

A charge de revanche, Mme Sarah Bernhardt inscrivit une pensée sur l’album royal el l’Impératrice des Indes parut considérer comme très précieux l’autographe de la Reine de l’art. »

Une tragédienne pour la reine Victoria à Nice figure dans le livre « Leurs Majestés » de Xavier Paoli, qu’il a publié en 1912.
